If you want to go to Farmingdale, please just don't show up because we have a lack of drivers. Talk to Glen or Gill if you are interested in going.

Special Guests

Mr. White
Mr. White came to our meeting today. He was impressed with our table at Cow Harbor Day and he also stressed the need for thank you's. He wants us to follow up on the project that our money went to for the Tsunami. He also told us about his new organization, Friends of Students for 60,000 Inc. it is made up of Northport alumni, parents, and other adults. The first meeting was in June, and 120 people came, but ever since the number of people at the meetings has been decreasing. They are planning to go on a fact finding trip down to Nicaragua, to possibly start their own project or support ours. The club also had a party in August which raised $750. On October 1 from 7-9, Sister Joan will be giving a talk at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs. She lives in Nicaragua, and will be going back right after this talk. There might be a fee to attend this talk, and the money will go to Joan to bring down to Nicaragua, with guidelines. Finally, we sent money to pro mujar. This is a charity that gives women $100 to $150 each to start their own business. We sent enough money to pay for 6 associations of 20 women each. To see more of this charity, go to promujar.org.

Hey everyone!

Today was our first meeting, where we basically just talked briefly about all of our projects for our new members.

Upcoming Events

The car wash will take place this Saturday, September 16. There are 2 shifts available, 9am-1pm and 1pm-5pm. It will take place on the Elwood side of the high school, and the money we raise will go to a general students fund. There's not a set price, the money we make will be based on donations. Today Jim Leonick from the East Northport Rotary Club came in to update us on the water filteration project for Nicaragua. Basically, Jim is working with the Rotary Club to promote clean water throughout the world, and he decided to team up with Students to put some of these filters down in Nicaragua. We are still trying to figure out what to use as filters, and ideas are being developed. There will be a benefit concert Friday November 3 at 7:30pm. It will be by the Rotary Club to raise money for these filters. Tickets cost $25, and only 100 will be sold. It will take place at the East Northport Christian Church on Vernon Valley. More info to come... any questions speak to Jackie, Gabby, or Gill.

Brief Summary of Other Students Events

Haunted Dungeon
Chairs: Neil, Ronnie, Duncan, Jake, Pat
The Haunted Dungeon will take place the last week of October at the Trinity Church in downtown Northport. Last year was our first time in a new location, and we raised $1,000, so if we make an effort to publicize this event it can be very succesful. There will be a meeting next Tuesday at 6pm in the senior well for anyone who wants to help out with the Haunted Dungeon. If you have any questions talk to one of the chairs.

SHANTY - (Shelter the Homeless And Needy This Year)
Chairs: Glen, Alex, Alex, Marisa
SHANTY is a very succesful event every year where we stimulate what it's like to be homeless. Students members raise money (at least $75) to participate in this event, which goes to the homless shelters. We sleep in cardboard boxes out on the softball field, and we try to portray the homeless experience as realistically as possible. Guest speakers also come every year, usually people who have been homeless, or people who work with homeless people. This event takes place in late October. If you have any questions talk to one of the chairs.

PS49U
Chairs: Katie, Lauren, Ian
This year we are going to to once a quarter to PS49, a public school in the Bronx. We bring them art supplies and school supplies, and teach them art and music lessons. If you have any questionms talk to one of the chairs.

Shelter Trips
Chairs: Katie, Lauren
Troughout the year we take trips to shelters in New York City. We bring clothes, supplies, and donations. More info to come... any questions talk to Lauren or Katie.

Farmingdale
Chairs: Glen and Gill
Farmingdale is a program where students interact with day laborers and teach them english and basic life lessons. It is a good way to practice your Spanish and get involed. Farmingdale is every Monday night from 6:45 to 9:30ish. Important: We have a lack of drivers, so if you can drive, please talk to Glen or Gill. Also, please only show up for Farmingdale if you signed up, because we need to know exactly how many drivers we need. If you have any questions talk to Glen or Gill

Nicaragua
Chairs: (updates to come)
Students for 60,000 takes two trips down to Nicaragua each year, one in February and one in April. This is our biggest project, and we are always preparing for it. We bring down money to provide medical aid, food, and running water as well as to build homes, schools, and cafeterias. While we're down there we build houses, interact with families, teach lessons in the schools, and feed about 800 students breakfast and lunch every day. Even if you don't go to Nicaragua, there are so many other ways that you can help prepare for this project. More info to come... any questions talk to Julia Eicher.

Extras at Today's Meeting
*If you have any donations (ex. clothes, school supplies), you can put them in the Students closet by the english resource room. Please tell Jackie Murphy whenever you put something in the closet, and make sure you take care of it within 1-2 weeks.
*Get involved! Don't be shy, sign up for everything, and take full advantage of this club.

See you next Tuesday!
